200th Anniversary of the arrival of Napoleon to St Helena Silver Coin
Marking the bicentenary of Napoleon’s exile to the island of St Helena, this silver proof coin, issued by the government of St Helena with the permission of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is minted and presented by The East India Company and is strictly limited to just 1,815 coins.
The design features Napoleon with his entourage arriving on HMS Northumberland at James Bay, St Helena on October 15th 1815.
Following his final defeat at Waterloo on 18th June 1815, the Emperor Napoleon I was exiled to the barren and windswept island of St Helena. Owned and governed by The East India Company, St Helena had been used as a re-fuelling and trading post since 1658. Surrounded by natural cliff face defences, the Emperor Napoleon was bound for his most impregnable bastille guarded by a garrison with over 2,800 men and 500 cannons.
