Behind the Craft - Victory

The ‘Queen’s Virtues’ were first revealed to the public as part of the Victoria Memorial, commissioned shortly after the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901. Eminent sculptor Sir Thomas Brock was briefed to design its central monument, which was formally unveiled by King George V in 1911.

Brock’s design featured a number of allegorical characters; the gold-gilded winged angel of Victory stands at the very top, with the figures of Courage and Constancy at her feet, themselves standing above representations of Truth, Justice and Charity and a magnificent, seated sculpture of Queen Victoria herself.

Stories

Victory

The Queen’s Virtues coin series has been launched to celebrate the 95th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who holds these six virtues as dearly as her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria did.

The ‘Queen’s Virtues’ form part of the Victoria Memorial monument outside Buckingham Palace, which features sculptured allegorical figures that personify:

• Victory
• Truth
• Charity
• Justice
• Courage
• Constancy
A key virtue recognised in both Victoria’s and Elizabeth II’s reign, Victory holds a position at the very top of the Victoria Memorial monument. In gilded bronze the Winged Victory stands upon a globe, holding a victor’s palm. The victor’s palm represents victory, triumph and peace, a symbol originating from the Middle East. In ancient Roman religion, Victoria was a goddess personifying Victory, the Roman’s equivalent of the Greek goddess, Nike.

Inspired by the Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace, our first design features a detailed depiction of the allegorical figure Victory surrounded by the text VICTORIA CONCORDIA CRESCIT which translates as Victory through Harmony.

This limited edition 1oz gold proof coin is presented in a bespoke case accompanied by an informative booklet and a numbered certificate which guarantees its quality and authenticity.
