Behind the Craft - Charity

The ‘Queen’s Virtues’ were first revealed to the public as part of the Victoria Memorial, commissioned shortly after the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901. Eminent sculptor Sir Thomas Brock was briefed to design its central monument, which was formally unveiled by King George V in 1911.

Brock’s design featured a number of allegorical characters; the gold-gilded winged angel of Victory stands at the very top, with the figures of Courage and Constancy at her feet, themselves standing above representations of Truth, Justice and Charity and a magnificent, seated sculpture of Queen Victoria herself.

Stories

IN OMNIBUS CARITAS;
IN ALL THINGS CHARITY

The ‘Queen’s Virtues’ form part of the Victoria Memorial monument outside Buckingham Palace, which features sculptured allegorical figures that personify:

•Victory
• Truth
• Charity
• Justice
• Courage
• Constancy

The Queen’s Virtues coin series was launched to celebrate the 95th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who holds those six virtues as dearly as her great-great-grandmother did.
The first coin in the series featured Victory and the second Truth, while this third design portrays Charity, the virtue of compassion for others and a spirit of generosity.

Though her duties are now reducing in her late-90’s, Queen Elizabeth II has dedicated more of her time and energy to more charities than any monarch that came before her; at the height of her activities it is estimated that Her Majesty helped to raise more than £1.4 billion per year.

This 2022 Charity design by artist Elles Kloosterman celebrates Her Majesty’s commitment to the light that monarchy can shine on causes that require our support.

The figure of Charity is a seated woman who peacefully nurses a baby she holds with her right arm, while the design is completed by the East India Company mint mark and the Latin phrase IN OMNIBUS CARITAS, or ‘In All Things Charity’.

This limited edition 1oz gold proof coin is presented in a bespoke case accompanied by an informative booklet and a numbered certificate which guarantees its quality and authenticity.
