2016 marks the 200th anniversary of the end of the Guinea era. This bicentenary issue of five gold proof coins is a celebration of this iconic coin paying homage to the historical designs found on the last circulating Guineas and interpreted using 21st century polishing and frosting techniques.
THE GUINEA
While in exile King Charles II had observed coinage produced by machine – the mill and screw press, which gave regularity in size and shape. When he was restored to the throne in 1660 and under his instruction a new gold coinage was struck in this method to build a more confident coinage and stable economy. And so, the minting of the first Guinea began.
Following the first Guinea in 1663, the Double Guinea was produced from 1664, the Five Guinea from 1668 and the half Guinea from 1669 onwards. In 1718, King George I introduced the diminutive Quarter Guinea, struck only a second time in 1762 by King George III. The final addition to the Guinea family was the Third Guinea, a seven shilling gold coin struck between 1797 & 1813.
