William Wyon is now recognised as one of the great coin designers. His ‘Young Head’ portrait of Queen Victoria appeared on the coins of her reign for nearly 50 years. His ‘Una and The Lion’ is considered one of history’s most beautiful designs and is a favourite of collectors of The East India Company Bullion.

As an ambitious young Assistant Engraver, William entered the competition to design the coins for the Great Recoinage of 1816. His submission was The Three Graces. While it did not win the competition, it is now seen as a neoclassical masterpiece, with early test ‘Pattern Pieces’ quickly snapped up by keen collectors.

The Three Graces is an early sign of Wyon’s remarkable talent, and we are delighted to make it available to collectors again as the first issue in our Masterpiece Collection. This strictly limited Pattern Piece has been recreated using techniques that honour Wyon’s own craftsmanship, presented in a luxury case with a numbered certificate of authenticity and a booklet that tells the story of The Three Graces.

Strictly limited, it is presented in a bespoke case along with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Details-

The Three Graces: Joy. Beauty. Youth.William Wyon basing his design on The Three Graces reflected a recent rebirth of interest in the Classics and Ancient Greek Mythology. The Three Graces, or Charities, are daughters of the mighty Zeus, residents of Mount Olympus and responsible for the good things in life: fun, youth, and happiness.
• Euphrosyne symbolises joy and laughter
• Aglaea is the personification of elegance and beauty
• Thalia represents festivity and the blooming of youth

Wyon cleverly gave these mythical goddesses a contemporary relevance by using them to tell the story of The Act of Union of 1801, which had recently seen the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland combine to form The United Kingdom. Wyon cast his Three Graces as Scotland, England and Ireland, adding recognisable symbols to identify the sisters with each of the three nations.

In 1817 around 50 test ‘Pattern Pieces’ were created of William Wyon’s Thee Graces, soon snapped up by collectors as Wyon built his reputation.
This 2021 Crown Pattern Piece, the first issue in our new Masterpiece Collection, has been created using a combination of skills and techniques similar to those employed by Wyon back in the 19th Century. We start with a plaster model, carefully hand-detailed, from which we create a steel master punch which is then hand finished by a Master Engraver. It is this human touch, expert craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation, that ensures all the detail and feel of Wyon’s original design is captured in this strictly limited-edition Pattern Piece.
