Created for commerce, trade dollars were a de-facto currency used for trade with the Orient. Issued by merchants in silver to the same specification as the Spanish Dollar, they allowed trade in tea, spices, porcelain and silks to flourish following the end of the First Opium War. They became symbolic calling cards for nations trading with the Far East.

A lasting tribute to a currency born out of commerce and trade, The East India Company’s Trade Dollar Collection includes designs inspired by the original coins issued by various countries across the world for trade with the Orient.

Details-

2018 British Trade Dollar

Featuring a design faithfully inspired by the original of a standing Britannia surrounded by an oriental pattern. The obverse, for the first time, displays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by an arabesque cartouche.

2018 US Trade Dollar

Inspired by the original William Barber design, considered by many to have been one of Barber’s best coin creations, the 2018 US Trade Dollar features the classic Seated Lady Liberty beautifully engraved with a uniquely patterned obverse.

2019 Chinese Trade Dollar

Featuring an exceptionally detailed depiction of the classic Chinese dragon in the centre, mirroring the ferocious depiction of a mythical dragon in traditional Chinese style as found on the original Chinese Dragon dollar of 1889.

2019 Japanese Trade Dollar

The Japanese Trade Dollar’s primary motif features a traditional depiction of a beautiful coiled dragon holding a ‘tamashi’ or orb regarded as a special jewel said to contain supernatural powers.

2020 French Trade Dollar

Inspired by the image captured in the original Piastre de Commerce reverse by Albert Barre the French Trade Dollar design features an exceptionally engraved seated allegorical female figure appears wearing a headdress of rays.
