During the 18th and 19th centuries, Indian artists were commonly employed by The East India Company to illustrate the manners and customs of India and record its many picturesque sights, monuments, deities, festivals, crafts and occupations. Over 2,600 examples of their work, a blend of Indian and British styles, is known as ‘Company paintings’ featured in this book is also represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
