Our Lapsang Souchong loose tea is traditionally smoked over oak and pine to recreate the authentic pine-smoked flavour workers perfected during the Qing Dynasty. Take comfort in the exotic flavour of this distinctive Chinese black tea.

This distinctive tea’s name and flavour are both shrouded in smoky mystery. In Qing Dynasty China, an army made camp in a tea factory, throwing out the tea workers in mid-process. When at last the workers returned to the factory, they realised that there would not be enough time to get the teas to market if dried in the normal way. Improvising, they dried the tea quickly on an open fire, not only saving time, but imparting a pine-smoke flavour which proved extremely popular.

The name, in Mandarin Chinese, was Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, where Zheng Shan was the place of origin and Xiao Zhong referred to the large, high-grade black tea leaves. It is believed that Zheng Shan somehow mutated into ‘Lapsang’, in the interaction between British traders of The East India Company and their Chinese counterparts.
