1608: Landing in IndiaFamed for its wealth and cornucopia of spices, cotton, silk and more extraordinary commodities, India had long been viewed as an essential trading partner. The East India Company’s ships first arrived in India, at the port of Surat, in 1608. Sir Thomas Roe reached the court of the Mughal Emperor, Jahangir, as the emissary of King James I in 1615, and gained Britain the right to establish a factory in Surat, thereby beginning a relationship which has transcended geography, cultures and beliefs. #EastIndiaCompany #India #History

Ginger is first thought to have been used over 2,000 years ago and is known to have first been grown across Southeast Asia. Highly prized for its healing properties, the Ancient Indians and Chinese used ginger to cure many ailments. The spicy root landed on British shores during The East India Company’s ‘spice runs’ and was actually one of the first spices to be exported from Asia.

Today, we continue to source our ginger from India and Sri Lanka. The intense fragrance and spicy flavour of ginger can be found enriching our famed Lemongrass & Ginger Infusion as well as adding an extra zing to our distinctively crunchy ginger biscuits.

1664: Trade with ChinaIn 1664 England, with the demand for tea booming, The East India Company placed an order for 100 lbs of tea and by 1750 annual imports reached 4,727,992 Lbs. The Company received Chinese permission to trade from Guangzhou (Canton) importing silk, tea and porcelain, and so trade began with the Hongs (the ruling family) who controlled trade within China.#EastIndiaCompany #China #History

Soon after receiving royal approval from Queen Elizabeth in 1600, The Company began to use an identifying mark called The Merchant’s Mark or the ‘Chop ‘ on all its goods and cargoes. Derived from the Hindi word, ‘chap ‘, meaning stamp, this mark was considered by many to be the first commercial trademark and soon became a global symbol of excellence recognizable across all of The Company’s trading territories.Initially a simple mark, it evolved by the 1700 ‘s into a heart shaped figure surmounted by a figure four, or sail, and containing the initials of The Company, EIC. 1613: Discovering JapanIn June 1613, The Clove, an East India Company ship, became the first British ship to reach Japan. Bearing official letters and gifts – including a telescope, a precious cup and cover and English wool from King James I – Captain John Saris presented them to the Shogun.In return, Saris received two suits of armour for King James I, ten spectacular painted gold-leaf screens, as well as a warm letter for the King and an official Vermilion Seal Letter granting the English permission to live and trade throughout Japan, thus beginning a remarkable friendship between two countries on opposite sides of the world.#EastIndiaCompany #Japan #History

Paisley – The global fashion icon.

It has been worn by everyone from Queen Victoria to The Beatles. It is instantly recognised across the world. And it is as iconic and fashionable today as it was when it put a small Scottish town at the centre of the global textile trade.

For over 2,000 years, the pattern we commonly know as 'Paisley', was first used on woven shawls in the province of Kashmir.

The popular floral motifs flourished in various art forms across India and examples of the beautiful artwork were brought back to Britain by the East India Company in 1775.

The Shawls quickly became the vogue, but they were in short supply and enormously expensive!

Imitated by British manufacturers in the Scottish town of Paisley, the Indian motif itself was reinterpreted and developed to conform to European taste. The impact was dramatic!

The patterned shawls quickly became fashionable, and the term ‘paisley’ became renowned throughout the world.

1773: The Boston Tea PartyThe event that sparked the American Revolution as the story goes. In fact, the Boston Tea Party was driven by resistance throughout America against the Tea Act – a tax which was passed by the British Parliament. The Americans of course rejected the new tax because they felt it violated their right to be taxed only by their own elected representatives. A group of men disguised as Native Americans dumped over 300 chests of tea from the East India Company. Today, a single chest, with its original East India Company marks survives in Boston’s Tea Party Museum.#EastIndiaCompany #BostonTeaParty #Tea

1601: First Ever VoyageIn 1601, five ships left Woolwich docks bound for the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia), on the first ever East India Company voyage. Led by James Lancaster, the crew held six letters of introduction from the Queen, each with a blank space for the name of the local king. Lancaster intended to trade iron, lead and British broad cloth for spice, but made little impression as the Dutch controlled trade, and the broad cloth was deemed too heavy to be of value by those living in the tropics.#EastIndiaCompany #PassageToIndonesia
