The US Trade Dollar

During the 1860’s an increase in trade between China and the United States paved the way for a ‘commercial’ US Trade Dollar that could compete with the silver trade coins used by other countries in the Orient. The new American Trade Dollars with a fineness of 90 percent silver and weighing 27.2 grams were minted for export from 1873. Minted until 1878, they were to become one of the shortest lived of all United States numismatic series.

Designed by British-born William Barber (1807 – 1879) who became chief engraver of the United States Mint in 1869, the US Trade Dollar coin was considered by many to have been one of Barber’s best coin creations. With its allegorical seated figure and outstretched arm holding an olive branch and next to trade goods including bales of wheat and clutching a banner reading “Liberty”, the coin was truly representative of a dynamic and ever-increasing economic power.

Minted in Philadelphia and San Francisco, the coin’s reverse depicted a bald eagle with wings outstretched, clutching an olive sprig in its left talon and three arrows in its right talon. Although the mintage of the ordinary Trade Dollar was discontinued in 1878, the US Mint did produce a very small number of proof coin specimens until 1883. These few examples are exceptionally rare and today, only a few remain which are highly prized by collectors.

The 2018 US Trade Dollar 1oz Gold Proof Coin is presented in The East India Company’s luxury presentation case with display tray, accompanied by a colourful and informative booklet and numbered certificate. The 2018 US Trade Dollar 1oz Gold Proof Coin has a total mintage limit of just 200 coins.
