2022 Masterpiece Gothic Crown 5oz Gold Proof Coin

William Wyon produced some of the most iconic coin designs of the Victorian era, including his 1839 Una & the Lion which used characters from Edmund Spencer’s medieval poem The Faerie Queene to represent the young Queen Victoria and the powerful nation under her control.

For the 1847 Crown, Wyon designed and engraved the coin’s Neo-Gothic obverse, including a new portrait of Queen Victoria to mark the 10th Anniversary of her coronation. And while his skills as an engraver are clear on the reverse too, it was designed by William Dyce, a Scottish artist and one of the forefathers of art education.

Primarily a painter, Dyce ran Edinburgh’s School of Design until 1838, when he moved to London to head up the new Government School of Design, which later became the Royal College of Art. In 1844 he was appointed Professor of Fine Art at King’s College London, before his talents combined with Wyon’s to create one of history’s most artistically significant coins, the Gothic Crown.
