The defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 brought an end to the Napoleonic Wars, a period of instability which had devalued the British currency. This led the British Government to announce the Great Recoinage of 1816, and a competition to find designs for these new coins.

The competition caught the eye of a 22-year-old Assistant Engraver at The Royal Mint, new to the post and eager to make his name. William Wyon was from a minting dynasty, with his father, uncle and cousin all forging careers as reputable engravers. So it was seemingly his destiny to follow in their footsteps, his remarkable talent strikingly evident in the design he submitted for the Great Recoinage; William Wyon’s The Three Graces.

While it did not win the competition, The Three Graces is now recognised as a neoclassical masterpiece, a favourite of coin enthusiasts around the world. The East India Company is delighted to make it available to collectors once again as this exclusive One Kilo Silver Proof Coin, delivered in a bespoke presentation case with a certificate of authenticity.

The Three Graces: Joy. Beauty. Youth.

William Wyon’s The Three Graces captured the early 19th Century rebirth of interest in the Classics to tell the story of the 1801 Act of Union, which saw the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland combine to form The United Kingdom.

In Ancient Greek Mythology The Three Graces are daughters of Zeus and goddesses of festivities:
• Euphrosyne symbolises joy and laughter
• Aglaea is the personification of elegance and beauty
• Thalia represents festivity and the blooming of youth

In his classic coin design Wyon cast the sisters as the nations of England, Scotland and Ireland, decorating their entwined figures with roses, thistles and shamrocks to give us clues to their true identity. They are encircled by the Latin “Foedus Inviolabile’ which translates as ‘unbreakable league’, a motto which holds true to this day.
